Make Meals Social for Better Health

Passing the greens! A vibrant salad gets handed off across a table full of fruit, plates, and good vibes.

In a world where we’re constantly on the go (or stuck inside), sitting at the table for a meal with family or friends might feel like a bit of a luxury. From catching up on emails and scrolling social media to eating on the run, eating has become one of the most common ways to multitask. But taking a break and eating with others offers many benefits that may play a role in your physical health, disease risk, and even mental health. Need more reasons to enjoy a meal with others? Here are a few to consider:

  1. You may just keep adding candles to your cake.Research shows that people who are lonely or socially isolated may have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and cognitive impairment. Prioritizing spending time with others and sharing meals together encourages social interaction and can reduce feelings of loneliness. So, the next time you sit down for a meal, remember, it’s not just about the food, it’s about the people you share it with — they’re the real recipe for longevity.
  2. Think lunch breaks are a waste of time? Think again! Taking a break to enjoy a meal with others may make you more efficient. One study showed that workers with the highest rates of social interaction were also happier and more productive at work. Skip the desk lunch and enjoy a café catch up with a colleague today. Your boss can’t argue against a boost in productivity!
  3. Say hello to mindful eating. Have you ever caught yourself eating a whole meal without really tasting or enjoying it while you were busy scrolling your phone or laptop? Eating while distracted, especially by screens, may interfere with your connection to your hunger/fullness cues and result in less satisfaction with your meal. Studies suggests that attentive eating may influence food intake. By putting down your phone and focusing on your meal, you can tap into your senses about how the food makes you feel, leading to more satisfying meals. It’s time to put down your phone and connect with friends IRL (in real life).
  4. Dinner doubled as therapy. Did you know that eating meals with others can benefit your mental health? Socializing while you eat can be a great mood booster and reduce feelings of loneliness and stress. These shared meals foster a sense of belonging and support, which are key for emotional well-being. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, a warm meal and good company can work wonders for your mental clarity.
  5. Help kids live their best life. Family meals can do wonders for children, and it is about more than just eating vegetables. Eating meals as a family has been linked to numerous health benefits for kids and adolescents. This includes improved grades, better nutrition for kids, lower likeliness of a kid becoming a picky eater, and many others. If it’s good for the kids, it must be good for us too!
  6. Create lasting memories. Let’s face it – some of the best memories are made around the table. Whether it’s a holiday feast, a casual get-together, or a virtual dinner with friends, shared meals help create bonds and strengthen relationships. These are the moments that we often treasure, long after the food is gone.

If you’re in the habit of eating while distracted or on the go, start by having two to three meals per week with others. As you begin to reap the benefits, you might find yourself looking forward to your mealtimes, not just for the food but for the company too. So, take that break, share stories and laugh, and enjoy your meal – your mind and body will thank you!
